Welcome to the Polar Express!

Today was Polar Express Day in our classroom!  After a busy morning or reading groups, Gym class, and an Elvis concert, we spent our afternoon taking part in a variety of Polar Express themed stations.  

We began by reading the classic story by Chris Van Allsburg.

We then began our 9 stations.  Students chose in which order they wanted to complete the stations.  There was a craft station to make a reindeer ornament, a station where you made a golden ticket (that must be kept for tomorrow), a Polar Express math game, an addition equation matching station, hot chocolate graphing, and more!

Tomorrow we will finish our celebration by watching the Polar Express movie, while drinking hot chocolate of course!  By showing Mrs. Deyoe the golden ticket, students will get a cup of hot chocolate to enjoy while watching the movie.  Of course everyone will get this special treat regardless of whether they still have their ticket, but they don't know that yet!

Wet on Wet and Holiday Math Games!

Today we were painting again!  We've used watercolours in the past, but today we tried a new technique called "wet on wet".  We began by wetting the whole area we wanted to paint first.  In our case we wet the sky of our painting.  We then added wet watercolour paint.  The result is a beautiful mix of colour!

We are not quite finished these beautiful trees.  We plan to use another media, paper, to add snowflakes!

Today we also had a chance to play some fun Holiday Math games.  There were several different choices to choose from.  Students worked in partners and had a chance to play several of the games.  They also got a special treat, marshmallows!  Each student got a collection of marshmallows to use as their game pieces.  When we were all finished they got to eat them.
