Mrs. Deyoe Goes to Hockey!

This afternoon, I went on my first trip to the Ice Plex with the hockey kids.  The non-hockey kids got to spend some time with Ms. Burland and enjoyed an extra Gym class and an Art project!  

What a treat it was to watch the kids skate, play, and learn the skills they will need to become better hockey players.  I had a lot of fun and I am excited about returning to help out again.

More Addition with Two-Digit Numbers

Over the last few days, we've continued practicing our addition and subtraction of groups of ten from two-digit numbers.  Today, we began the next step in our learning, adding with two different two-digit numbers.

Sitting on the carpet we received a group of ten frames to use with the person sitting next to us.  We began by making one number using the ten frames.  We then made a second number.  These two numbers were the addends for our number sentence.

For example:

21 + 17 =

We then grouped all our full ten frames (or groups of ten) together.  Doing this gave us two separate groups-our tens group and our ones group.

20 + 10 = 30

1 + 7 = 8

We could then add our two groups together to come up with our answer.

30 + 8 = 38

We continued practicing with different numbers using the same process.  By the end of the lesson, most of us were really beginning to understand double digit addition.

We will continue practicing using the ten frames to assist us with our understanding, and then we will move onto a bit more abstract manipulative, base ten blocks.  Our goal is after practicing with concrete materials, we will be able to solve addition questions without them.

The Six Geographic Regions of Mexico

In Theme Studies, we are learning all about Mexico.  For the last two weeks, students have been learning about the six geographic regions that make up the country.  Together we've read from a couple of books to give us an overview on the land and vegetation in Mexico.  We then got together in small groups to learn about one region in more detail.  

There are six regions:

1)The Central Plateau

2)The Central Highlands

3)The Northwest Deserts

4)Yucatan Penninsula

5)The Mountainous South

6)The Tropical Lowlands

Each group got information on the region that they chose and using this information built a relief.  They then did a brief presentation on their region to explain to the whole class what their region was and some of the things they included.  After each group got a chance to present, we then put the regions together.  We knew that together they formed the entire country, but other than that, it was just like a big puzzle.  Finally, we figured it out!
