How Much, How Many, How Far, How Heavy, How Long, How Tall is 1000?

Over the past several weeks we have been working on developing our number sense by working with numbers up to 1000.  When we first began we read the book "How Much, How Many, How Far, How Heavy, How Long, How Tall is 1000?" as an introduction to the concept of 1000.  Last week we reread the book to refresh our memories before creating a representation of what 1000 actually is.

Here is the book.

 We began by creating groups of ten.  Students received strips of paper to glue 10 toothpicks onto.  Students continued to do this until all of our strips (100) were complete.

We then counted by 10s all the way to 1000.  Each student put each "ten" in a line (or group) until we reached 100.  At that point we started a new line/group.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Today Room 20's day was filled with a variety of Thanksgiving themed activities.  This morning during our Math class, we worked on Thanksgiving Math.  We had three different activities.  One was ordering three-digit numbers, another was working with numbers to create a variety of three-digit numbers, and the third was an activity that had students practicing their addition.

This afternoon was our Thanksgiving Stations.  Six stations were placed around the room for students to work at.  There was a Thanksgiving Dinner station, where student selected items to buy for dinner.  They had a $25 limit and they had to choose items based off the prices.  There was a station for disguising a turkey, a station where students rearranged the letters in the word cornucopia to find new words, a reading corner filled with Thanksgiving books, an activity book station, and a Thanksgiving Math games station.  Everyone had a lot of fun!

Crazy Leaf Art

Yesterday was Art!  We worked on a multi-step and multi media art project, our Crazy Leaves!

To begin with we chose the type of leaf we wanted to draw, then drew it diagonally so that it took up the majority of our piece of paper.  We also drew in the veins of the leaf.  Once we had done that we used a black Sharpie to go over our pencil lines, outline the leaf and veins.  The next step was to use crayons to create patterns in the spaces of the leaf.  These are the spaces created between the edge of the leaf and the veins.  We also used crayons to trace around the leaf three times.  Once we were finished this, it was time to paint!  We used watercolours as crayons would resist them.  We talked about how we wanted our paint to be really wet so that the colours would all blend together.  This is working towards a technique called "wet on wet" where you "paint" the paper with water first then add the paint.  It creates a very neat effect.

Writing a Class Book

Today Room 20 began writing a new Class Book for our classroom.  

Yesterday Mrs. Deyoe was away and not all of us treated our guest teacher respectfully.  Because of this, we discovered that our room had a need.  We needed to treat our guest teachers with respect, the same respect that we show Mrs. Deyoe so that they feel welcome and happy when they visit us.  So to help them, we are writing a class book.  This book will help the guest teacher know our routines and what the expectations are both in our classroom and our school.  Together we wrote the first page of our book as a shared writing piece, letting guest teachers know what they can expect from us.

Welcome to our classroom!  We are Team 20.  We hope you are happy during your day here.  Do you know what our classroom rules are?  They are:
