It's been one week since we planted our bean seeds, and most of us have at least a little sprout in our cups. There are still a few plants that have not begun to grow yet, but we are hoping with a bit more time, we will see some results.
Today we filled in our Week 1 observation in our bean plant journals. Students sketched out what their plant currently looked like then recorded any observations. We will continue to do this for the next few weeks as to observe our plant's development and growth.
One interesting observation we made from our experimental plants, was that the plant that has no air, has actually grown! The question is, if plants need oxygen, how is it growing? Mrs. Deyoe found this a little confusing as well. The only thing we could think of is that there was some oxygen trapped in the bag. We'll have to continue to watch to see what happens as the plant continues to not get any new air.
After we finished caring for our beans, we continued working on our plant part foldable. This is a book we have been working on for the last couple of days. Together as a class we came up with the function of each plant part. We recorded it in the correct box. On the front cover is a picture of a full plant (roots through flower), and you can open each flap to find out the function.
Here is what they will look like when they are finished. A couple of students have finished, but most still need a bit more time.
